| Subject: Royal Tern,
Sterna maxima |
| Date: 18 February 2004 |
| Locale: St. Pete Beach, St. Petersburg,
Florida |
| Photographer: Kendall W. Corbin |
| Comments: The Royal Tern is
similar in appearance to its close relative, the Caspian Tern,
but this is not a problem where their geographic distributions
do not overlap. Where they do, however, it is a different matter.
One must compare the color and size of their beaks, the amount
of
black
on the head, and the amount of black in the wing feathers. |
