| Comments: The under side of
the wings of this species, and many of its relatives, contrasts
sharply
with the upper side. In some species, the closed wings look
like a dead leaf; in other species there is the appearance of a
head with eye spots. In Painted Ladies, the eye
spots
may serve to distract potential predators, thereby making the butterflies
more difficult to catch. |
