Images of Nature by Kendall and Susanne Corbin

Painted Lady: Order Code Ai-23
Subject: Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui
Date: 12 September 2003
Locale: Eagan, Dakota County, Minnesota
Photographer:  Kendall W. Corbin
Comments:  The under side of the wings of this species, and many of its relatives, contrasts sharply with the upper side. In some species, the closed wings look like a dead leaf; in other species there is the appearance of a head with eye spots. In Painted Ladies, the eye spots may serve to distract potential predators, thereby making the butterflies more difficult to catch.
